Sinus tachycardia :
This is not considered an arrhythmia but may require treatment. Sinus tachycardia is identified as a regular heart rate of over 100 beats per minute. When this occurs when you’re anxious, scared, exercising or in pain, then this makes sense! If you are not, this could cause problems.
Causes :
- 1. Caffeine consumption (coffee, energy drinks)
- 2. Fever
- 3. Some medicines
- 4. Anemia
- 5. Infection
- 6. Damage to the heart (i.e heart attack or failure)
- 7. Severe bleeding
- 8. Very low blood pressure
- 9. Lung disease
Inappropriate sinus tachycardia is a diagnosis that may require monitoring. Inappropriate sinus tachycardia is identified as sinus tachycardia that can occur consistently or can occur randomly and is not caused by any of the usual causes of sinus tachycardia. This could be your natural heart beat.
If you are symptomatic or at risk of heart failure, This can be treated with medications such as a beta blocker or Ivabradine which will slow and regulate the heart beat to decrease symptoms and reduce the risk of developing heart failure.
Avoiding dehydration is also highly recommended in those with inappropriate sinus tachycardia.
